Viking invaders

by Amanda Fleet

To Viking, the purpose of
life is to find the courage
to express oneself.

Be brave.
Be a Viking.

So it says on the inside back cover of one of the latest Viking notebooks to arrive at Nero's. Last week, Scrib talked about the Saga Verso. This week I'm going to show you the Viking Ego!

The notebooks are a true A5 size (21 cm x 14.8 cm). There are two different styles of covers, but I would have to say that I would always go for the ones with the drawings of The Great Beast (from the larger Jelling Stone). The Great Beast covers come in six, slightly metallicised colours, with two stripes of a different colour around the middle.

The notebooks contain 64 pages of plain, 105 gsm paper, that's great for sketching, writing, doodling. You could even do light watercolours on it, apparently (though I've never tried it myself). The cover is a robust card, with rounded corners and a stitched spine.

I love the drawings. A while back, Nero had packs of cards by Viking, with colourised versions of these same stylised images from the Jelling stone, and I keep hoping they'll be back in stock sometime. There are greetings cards available with some of the drawings, too.

The other Viking Ego notebook covers have the same paper, stitched spine and so on, but the cover drawing is of a pencil.

I think they're fabulous, stylish notebooks, and certainly won't break the bank at £8.
